<br />
Hang on, how is it January 2nd already? And for that matter, when did it become 2016?<br />
<br />
This year seems to have flown by in a whirlwind of new jobs, new opportunities and commuting, with 2016 set to follow a similar pattern. Last night I woke up in a cold sweat, racking my brains for something I was meant to have done. I finished all of my work before Christmas, didn't I? I bought all of the family presents I'm sure. And then it hit me: I haven't compiled my Best Albums of 2015 list! Now an annual tradition only I care about, it adds an element of much needed routine to the Christmas break, and allows me to reflect on some of the beautiful sounds which infiltrated my ears this year. So without further ado, in reverse order, here we go...<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello there! It's been a while since I've posted anything Soe related - many apologies for that! Life has been pretty hectic work (and play) wise over at Jam and Soe HQ. So if, like me you are feeling a little unprepared for Monday - here are some <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/people/gretchenmist?ref=pr_profile" target="_blank">gorgeous prints</a> to soothe your tired eyes as you sip your (zillionth) cup on tea and crack on with the day. They're the work of <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/people/gretchenmist?ref=pr_profile" target="_blank">Belinda Marshall</a>, an Australian artist with a love of all things abstract. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Happy Monday! </div>

I have recently started having a longer commute to work, and to relieve the boredom associated with driving the same route 3 hours a day, I listen to podcasts. I've always been a comedy podcast fan, but recently have been more interested in finding something with a little more substance. I have been listening to <a href="http://www.radiolab.org/" target="_blank">Radiolab</a> for years, and one of their recent episodes turned me on to a great podcast called <a href="http://loveandradio.org/" target="_blank">Love + Radio</a>. It's a similar format; simple stories told well, but there is one in particular I'd like to share with you because it really haunted me on my drive. Not for those of a nervous disposition, please take the time to listen to The Book by Hans Anderson, you won't regret it...</div>

I am in the throes of redundancy currently so am prone to bouts of wallowing, and today I brought the Boss along for company. It's Bruce Springsteen, with the classic The River.</div>
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nAB4vOkL6cE" width="600"></iframe><br />
<br />
You can't go wrong learning Bruce tracks, most of them are fairly simple but very satisfying. On a side note, he appears to be playing the very telecaster I desire in the picture here, it must be a sign. As per usual, the chords can be found from the ever reliable Ultimate Guitar Tabs <a href="http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/b/bruce_springsteen/the_river_crd.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458469739119713400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5673175309294530638.post-47919080226943359522015-03-19T20:54:00.001+00:002015-07-13T16:21:26.483+01:00A Tune A Day: Day Six<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today I am choosing one of my all time favourite songs, from one of my all time favourite albums. It is the fantastic I Think I Need A New Heart by The Magnetic Fields, from their seminal classic album 69 Love Songs. If you have never heard it I urge you to check it out, it's exactly as it sounds: 69 pop songs about love, but the level of quality throughout is really something, and the subject of love is approached from every angle, often amusing, and frequently heartbreaking.</div>
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/84DrsZ2O5XU" width="600"></iframe><br />
<br />
The chords can be found on the excellent <a href="http://stephinsongs.wiw.org/tab/69ls1.html#11" target="_blank">Stephin Songs</a> website, which has the chords to every Magnetic Fields song committed to tape.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05458469739119713400noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5673175309294530638.post-8240146662320686692015-03-18T20:25:00.001+00:002015-07-13T16:22:33.452+01:00A Tune A Day: Day FiveThis weekend we are off to see the Elliott Smith documentary <a href="http://heavenadoresyou.com/" target="_blank">Heaven Adores You</a>, and so thought it would be appropriate to learn one of his songs, so I chose one of my favourites, Twilight.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/27ReHQ7jPp0" width="600"></iframe>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Elliott Smith was notorious for overlaying several guitars (and vocals), so this is a nice one to learn as it can be easily recreated on an acoustic. As always, the chords are courtesy of Ultimate Guitar Tab, and can be found <a href="http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/e/elliott_smith/twilight_ver3_crd.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

A real blast from the past today, with a slice of pop perfection from Ian Broudie and co., it's Change by the Lightning Seeds. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/p74I4CGo2No" width="600"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Okay, it's a bit cheesy, but I bet you enjoyed that really. Also, that first <a href="http://www.8notes.com/guitar_chord_chart/dm7.asp" target="_blank">Dm7</a> in the verse is a lovely, lovely chord. As always, the full chords can be found at Ultimate Guitar Tab <a href="http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/l/lightning_seeds/change_crd.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

Something a little bit sad today, but with some really nice (simple) chords in it: Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees.</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know, I know, too easy! But the idea is more to build up a repertoire, and <i>then</i> explode into spontaneous solos. The chords can once again be found on Ultimate Guitar Tab by clicking <a href="http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/r/radiohead/fake_plastic_trees_ver4_crd.htm" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>

Something a bit more challenging today from me to you. I am currently devouring (at an increasingly unhealthy rate) the excellent John Lennon biography "<a href="http://www.theguardian.com/books/2008/oct/05/music" target="_blank">John Lennon - The Life</a>" by Philip Norman, and as such thought I'd learn one of my favourite Beatles tracks. So, today's song is "I'm Looking Through You" from Rubber Soul.</div>
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_6GeqjKif8g" width="600"></iframe>

For some time I have dreamt of owning a <a href="http://intl.fender.com/en-GB/guitars/telecaster/american-vintage-52-telecaster-maple-fingerboard-butterscotch-blonde/" target="_blank">Telecaster</a> electric guitar, and this year I have decided to bite the bullet and buy one. My birthday is coming up next weekend (send cards/gifts/money to Jam & Soe, Jam & Soe Towers, England), and so that is the day I will make my long awaited purchase.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the run up to this, I thought it would be appropriate to learn some songs to play on my new axe (seems sensible, right?). I have noodled about on acoustic guitars for some years, but figured it was time I actually got good at it. So, I thought I would learn a tune a day (snappy title, I'm surprised no one else has used it...) until I'm up there with <a href="https://youtu.be/BGeHWBcZ6D8" target="_blank">Hendrix</a>, or until I run out of free time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, day one: a nice easy song to get me started. A bit too easy actually, but thought I'd share these with you to make sure I actually learn them, and so you can if you like as well. I chose "Crash" by the Primitives, a power pop classic, which happened to be on <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music" target="_blank">6music </a>this morning, and also happens to consist of three chords.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

The chords can be found on Ultimate Guitar Tabs <a href="http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/p/primitives/crash_crd.htm" target="_blank">here</a>, check back tomorrow for something a little more challenging!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope you bid adieu to 2014 in a suitably jovial fashion last night! We opted to cook up a number of tasty dishes from Yotam's <a href="http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk/plenty-more-shop" target="_blank">Plenty More</a> book - before heading down to the seafront to watch wonky fireworks and raise a glass to 2015. With a slightly fuzzy head, today has been a cozy affair rearranging furniture and hiding any remaining bottles of alcohol in the highest of cupboards. Of course, the 1st of January brings with it the need for a new calendar to pop on the wall. J kindly took up the task of trawling thorough free printables and here we have it - an ace calender from <a href="http://www.chantelemma.com/free-download-2015-calendar/" target="_blank">Chantel Emma</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Happy 2015 - may it bring you much fun and frolics! </div>

So apparently that awkward bit between Christmas and New Year is called Twixmas - who knew? I hope you've been having a lovely break so far. Now that the big day is over (sigh) I am safe to share with you a few of the presents I whipped up for the relli's (or relatives). I became quite the <a href="http://www.woolandthegang.com/" target="_blank">Wool and the Gang</a> groupie and knitted a few extra Zion lion hats, including an 8-bit beanie and a Giles Eek hat to go with the 1984 beanie I wittered on about in an earlier <a href="http://jamandsoe.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/feeling-wooly.html" target="_blank">post</a>. The picture's aren't amazing I'm afraid as seconds after leaving the needles - the hats were swiftly wrapped and placed beneath the tree! Last minute - me?<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's that wonderful time of the year again; wrapping up warm, sipping mulled wine, decorating the tree. As usual, of course, I am shunning all of that to furiously listen my way through hundreds of albums to come up with a definitive list of the best releases of the year. I continue to do this thankless task year after year because, in truth, I enjoy it. Coming up with a "Best of" list each year forces me to consume as much music as possible throughout the year, and try out bands I may have otherwise overlooked or not given the time to, just in case they're <i>the one. </i>So, without further ado, may I present my top albums of 2014...</div>

It was one year ago today that we first got the keys to our allotment: Plot 125.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT8fkRunoP1bdy5xKZPGwYDN5w3sJbau5lvO9f8FZs-JIH5e3Hhyphenhyphen26JpKetu82Ntg_gvgqYb3qFqRVsjx40vWttumD86TQsJ2aOW4PJ2PqSisw-FgTTiVG5151M7rt7cDOvao6tyrMEEyL/s640/blogger-image--61279212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT8fkRunoP1bdy5xKZPGwYDN5w3sJbau5lvO9f8FZs-JIH5e3Hhyphenhyphen26JpKetu82Ntg_gvgqYb3qFqRVsjx40vWttumD86TQsJ2aOW4PJ2PqSisw-FgTTiVG5151M7rt7cDOvao6tyrMEEyL/s640/blogger-image--61279212.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
As our neighbour helpfully informed us on the first day; "The first year's the hardest". Well, neighbour who we've never seen again, we actually had a very productive first year, with impressive yields of garlic, onions, lettuces, potatoes, sweet corn and radishes. So this time of year is all about getting the plot sorted for next year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_9M3gmIrlPGykYz4hbTKsCcfdxtQOrMaMD1n9pek1UaHNnMF2Rji_eqCtjsrJWEVQSQSpOcqMRdJPYzRqkaRhiU8Cjd13V_ZmCQ0EumMHIUgHGwXgIif7v4CYpaEUtrM5Az4vCtgaZgug/s640/blogger-image--480704478.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_9M3gmIrlPGykYz4hbTKsCcfdxtQOrMaMD1n9pek1UaHNnMF2Rji_eqCtjsrJWEVQSQSpOcqMRdJPYzRqkaRhiU8Cjd13V_ZmCQ0EumMHIUgHGwXgIif7v4CYpaEUtrM5Az4vCtgaZgug/s640/blogger-image--480704478.jpg" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
As well as planting Elephant Garlic (that's one clove...)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvkiO7fpkpAVORHR9uxllJdSZ_iAIFKiXV27GxP2Z9SHCdYa2ihCT2I_Aq7_uk0TLzbECNDDCoCBzcUrke5hx3ayd0tPVV022cc7Q-qw6xFkE66A8VgpOM2P6-rvp6wNcGeaaDZqb_ChEW/s640/blogger-image--236298863.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvkiO7fpkpAVORHR9uxllJdSZ_iAIFKiXV27GxP2Z9SHCdYa2ihCT2I_Aq7_uk0TLzbECNDDCoCBzcUrke5hx3ayd0tPVV022cc7Q-qw6xFkE66A8VgpOM2P6-rvp6wNcGeaaDZqb_ChEW/s640/blogger-image--236298863.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
And making sure it's all planted in perfectly straight lines.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3c2WWGAlNlW5_wxdHh00X6dIPlSeHkc7S2TMfdy_vM1pDvqPnz_TFF0aUPSEHTzxLIIhRMlUSdk2J-VwNTXaj0xaRv7OLqX1zJnYuHFA6j2D1YVQjw6pV-cvQeUYoybkOlFhNNZPpr7P/s640/blogger-image--2008316117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis3c2WWGAlNlW5_wxdHh00X6dIPlSeHkc7S2TMfdy_vM1pDvqPnz_TFF0aUPSEHTzxLIIhRMlUSdk2J-VwNTXaj0xaRv7OLqX1zJnYuHFA6j2D1YVQjw6pV-cvQeUYoybkOlFhNNZPpr7P/s640/blogger-image--2008316117.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So I am pleased to present: Plot 125, one year on!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

On a recent trip to Brighton's Snooper's Paradise I stumbled upon this 80s relic which I'm hoping will give my home compositions a much needed electro twist. Watch this space for the results, and in the meantime enjoy its retro good looks (whilst I enjoy the demo song: Wham's 1984 classic "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIgZ7gMze7A" target="_blank">Wake Me Up Before You Go Go</a>"...)</div>

I love Autumn. As the days draw in and get chillier, there's nothing better than to hibernate with a ball of wool and a couple of sticks - more so if the wool is crazy big and as soft as candyfloss. This 1984 beanie is the brainchild of <a href="http://www.woolandthegang.com/" target="_blank">Wool and the Gang.</a> It knitted up incredibly fast - with the all-seeing-eye of big brother embroidered on after (using duplicate stitch). You can find the pattern and the wool <a href="http://www.woolandthegang.com/" target="_blank">here</a> - or buy ready made from the Gang itself. I wonder what Mr G Orwell would think? Good things I hope. </div>

I was lucky enough to catch the closing weekend of <a href="http://www.bmag.org.uk/events?id=3073" target="_blank">Grayson Perry, The Vanity of Small Differences</a>. A total of six tapestries lined the wall of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, each of which depicted stages of the life of Tim Rakewell as he rose from rags to riches. They are the result of the interactions and exchanges between people and places visited during the filming of his 2012 TV series, <a href="http://www.channel4.com/programmes/in-the-best-possible-taste-grayson-perry/articles/all/the-vanity-of-small-differences" target="_blank">All in the Best Possible Taste</a>. Simply put - the six tapestries are amazing - gorgeous, witty and at times, quite harrowing as they document class differences within modern society. The Bayeux of our times maybe?</div>

Again - sorry for the hiatus. I stumbled across <a href="http://cottonandflax.com/" target="_blank">this </a> online shop today. It goes by the name of Cotton & Flax. I'm a little in love with the simple beauty of this ladies textiles! So much so it's brought me out of my blogging slumber. I hope you had the chance to enjoy the long weekend and hopefully it won't be so long until we next meet. Now - to go daub perfectly aesthetic brushstrokes all over my pillows ... </div>

Generally, I am someone who insists on reading a book from cover to cover before even contemplating the idea of starting another, but when S presented me with <a href="http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2013/10/17/1382029017340/Morrissey-Autobiography-011.jpg" target="_blank">Morrissey's Autobiography</a> as an early Christmas present (most likely to keep me quiet on our long train journey home), I couldn't resist starting it straight away. I will not attempt to review it here, except to say that it is bitter, hilarious, vitriolic and self aware in equal parts, and an essential read for any <a href="http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/38015371/Morrissey%2BYoungHairstyle.jpg" target="_blank">Morrissey </a>or Smiths fan. What I will say is that it has re-awakened my fascination with this famously reclusive man, and whilst trawling the internet for interview footage (of which there is little), I stumbled upon the documentary below which seeks to answer the question, why is <a href="http://cdn.mhpbooks.com/uploads/2013/10/Morrissey%2Btyper3.jpg" target="_blank">Morrissey </a>so fascinating?! It's longer than the average video posted on here (I'm still getting through it myself), but an interesting insight into the mind of the Morrissey fan... </div>

Why not pick up some needles and get knitting? Not only can it be extremely relaxing, but it can make watching the TV or listening to a podcast say seem more fulfilling. Just the other day my Ma was telling me that Sigmund Freud's youngest daughter used to knit during analytic hours - now there's multitasking! To top things off there are now a multitude of useful blogs, books and clubs concerning the art. All of which dispel the myth that you have to be female, over the age of 50 and own at least one cat to qualify. Choose ethical wool for your creations and you'll have one of the most YOEF abiding items hanging in your wardrobe. Trust me, it's oddly addictive.</div>

So, many of you will have figured out that my office is not of fixed locale. One day it might be the desk in my humble abode, on a train as I make my way to campus and/ or the waiting room in between, sometimes it might <i>actually</i> be the office. Although my desk (and its size, motion or shape) might change - one thing I can't do without - is a good soundtrack to the working day. So as it is Monday after all, I bring you a roundup of my favourite artists to work to. Which makes me wonder ... what do like in your ears to accompany the daily grind? Do you like some ambient noise (like I do) or do you favour NOISE, as it were? I'm open to requests. </div>

My favourite movie show, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lvdrj" target="_blank">Kermode and Mayo's Film Review</a>, recently ran an excellent short film competition entitled "Well Done U". As the title suggests, the challenge was to create a two minute feature which, if classified, would receive a U certificate. This meant that a 120 second orgy, or two minutes of extreme violence, would not be considered, and as such the film makers had to use their imagination to maintain interest and a decent narrative for the allotted duration. (On a side note, this makes it seem as if I am only satisfied by ultra-violent, sexually explicit films, and I can assure you this is not the case...). The results were surprising and full of fantastic ideas, and in the end a short by director Philip Chidell entitled "<a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01nrrcn" target="_blank">Pong</a>" achieved first place. All of the shortlisted films can be viewed <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01nb8ht" target="_blank">here</a>, but I wanted to draw your attention to my favourite of the runners up, a highly imaginative piece by director John Powell called "The Colouring Box".</div>
