Sorry for the drought of posts recently, I have been busy prepping for a rather exciting trip - more of that later. For now, I bring you a knitted lap-blanket I made for my nan's birthday. I'm hoping it will keep her snug when she sits on her patio as the cool summer evenings draw in. I knitted it up in a bamboo/wool blend, so its super soft. Not quite sure what went on when I was picking skeins of wool though - my current obsession with mustard, blue and grey is erring on the unhealthy ...
Anyhow, for other stick and wool wielders out there, I used the following pattern to get my chevrons:
cast on a multiple of 12 stitches, plus 3 stitches to balance the pattern and work as follows ...
Row 1: (RS) k1, k2tog, *k4, (k1, yo, k1) in next st, k4, sl next 2 sts tog as if to knit, k1, psso (double decrease); rep from * to last 3 sts, end ssk, k1
Row 2: Knit
Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pattern
** I used hot mustard (174) & scooby blue (121) for the contrasting chevrons and warm grey (170) for the body. It took roughly 2 balls of each colour to make the full blanket **
I have a few questions about this, but first let me say how beautiful it is!! I am planning on making this in cream, tan and lavender for my cousin who will be giving birth in a few months, and your pattern is exactly what I have been searching for!! So on with the questions. What size needles did you use and what exact size is the blanket you made? I'm assuming you used circular needles, but I can't really tell how large it is from the photos. ReplyDeleteHello! Nice to hear from you. The needles you choose will depend on the weight of the wool you have picked. If you are going for a dk like me (I used the "snuggly baby bamboo dk" by Sirdar) then UK 4mm needles will do nicely. I used straight needles, but you can also use circular needles so long as you knit flat and not in the round. Regarding size - unfortunately I failed to measure my blanket before handing it over to my nan; but the joy of this pattern is you can tailor it to your needs. With your needles and yarn of choice, try casting on 24 stitches + 3 extras (i.e. a total of 27 stitches); follow the pattern for a few rows, then measure the width of your knitting. For me, its around 13cm at this point (although yours will differ depending on how tight you knit). Bearing that in mind, if I want a blanket say 4 times as wide; I know to cast on a total of (4*24sts)+ 3sts = 99sts. Hope that makes sense - sorry to get all mathematical on you! I'm happy to answer any other questions should you have them. Oh and your colour combo sounds ace!
